Prevention is better than cure...
As the winter approaches there are several easy things you can do to help your body adjust to the cold dry climate and support your immune system through the cold and flu season.
Drinking water throughout the day is very important. As the heat gets cranked in indoor spaces and the air outside gets dry and cold you may find your skin gets dry, your finger nails get brittle and your lips become chapped. You may even experience headaches, all of which are signs of dehydration. Drinking herbal teas is also a good option to keep you warm and hydrated.
Essential fatty acids are also important in the winter months. EFA's are found in foods such as cold water fish, nuts and seeds, flax and hemp oils (may also be taken in supplement form). EFA's are needed by the body for temperature control as well as for immune function. Both of these systems get stressed in the winter needing extra support. EFA's will also help keep your skin and hair healthy during the winter season.
Taking a vitamin C supplement during the cold and flu season is highly recommended. Vitamin C supports liver and immune function, systems that work extra hard to fight viruses. Not all vitamin C supplements are the same. Ester C supplements (ask your local health food store clerk) are especially good as they are absorbed more easily.
